A Certified Industrial Mechanic is a person who has gone the extra step to stay competitive in the field. For employers, it means that your employee is committed to applying himself/herself to a level of excellence on the job. Being an AIT Certified Industrial Mechanic carries a sense of pride for the mechanic, and it can be useful for the employer to assess the progress of the employee.
Certification Levels
The Certified Industrial Mechanic program is a three stage certification process consisting of Foundation, Specialist, and Professional levels.
Certified Industrial Maintenance Mechanic Foundation: This level requires the completion of five of the following basic level training courses followed by a 50 question exam.
- Basic Hydraulics
- Basic Pneumatics
- Basic Mechanical Systems
- Print Reading

- Basic Relay Logic

Certified Industrial Mechanic Specialist: This certification level builds upon the foundation level. The specialist level is structured to provide vital knowledge in any of the following specialized areas. Each of the following courses consists of 4-days of hands-on instruction followed by a 50 question exam.
Fluid Power: This course consists of 1-day of Advanced Pneumatics followed by 1-day of Advanced Hydraulics and finishes with 2-days of Electro-hydraulics.
Electrical: This course consists of 2-days of Industrial Electrical Controls.
Machining: This course starts with 1-day covering precision measurement and math and 3-days covering conventional Lathe and Vertical Mill operations.
Welding: This course consists of 4-days of instruction covering Oxyacetylene and Plasma Cutting, Wire and SMAW Welding.
Vibration Analysis: This course starts with 1-day of precision coupling alignment followed by 3-days of machine balancing and vibration monitoring and analysis.
Certified Industrial Mechanic Professional: In order to obtain this level, participants must complete the foundation level and two of the specialist level courses.
